Feb. 12 (Bloomberg) -- The Fort Worth-Dallas area set a 24- hour snowfall record in a storm that left more than 180,000 electric customers in the dark, canceled 1,500 flights across the U.S. South and dazzled residents.
As of 4 a.m. local time, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport recorded 12.5 inches (32 centimeters) of snow, breaking the previous mark of 12.1 inches set in January 1964, according to a weather service bulletin. The snow pushed the seasonal tally to 15.7 inches making this the second snowiest since 1977- 1978, when 17.6 inches fell.
“This is big for North Texas,” said Eric Martello, a weather service senior forecaster in Fort Worth. “The system came in at the right time of day yesterday and ended three or four hours ago setting all kinds of records.”
